Superstaff™ happened with the need for a more efficient system for notating sounds in the outer registers. Thus began an experimental period of solid staffline combinations of 5+5, 6+4, 6+5 and ultimately 6+6:
The true epiphany ocurred when it became apparent that:
When treble A and bass E ledger lines became continuous STAFF SPELLING BECAME IDENTICAL!
This meant that major obstacles of two sets of staff spelling was removed:
E G B D F A
ONE set of line and spaces, and ONE set of key signature patterns!
The combination of:
Gives STAFF PLACEMENT FOR EVERY SOUND IN IT'S OWN REGISTER
The only SINGLE LEDGER LINE is always a "C" and it always occurs between the staves.
The modification to continuous ledger lines makes the transition from Grandstaff to Superstaff™ very natural, since our musician’s eyes already read the ledger line notes. This means all existing music can remain as written, with musicians reading both systems as needed. Future composers will determine which system is more efficient as the Superstaff™ option becomes available, but Grandstaff manuscripts will always be interpreted as written, with ledger lines as they appear in those manuscripts.
Therefore, future musicians may use both systems interchangeably. As with the introduction of all new concepts, a “learning curve” will exist during the introduction of Superstaff™, but the logic and efficiency of note placement and performance ease is apparent with this format.
